I‘m sure at some point or another, we’ve all had a dream about having a large kitchen, where space was not a concern. A kitchen that had enough room for three executive chefs, two souse chefs and space for someone to clean up your mess. In many cases, we are confronted with tight quarters in kitchen areas and barely have enough space for a table and chairs. Luckily, we have a viable solution for claustrophobic kitchen areas.
If you live in a downtown area or an apartment building where the majority of kitchen space is limited, than this kitchen shelving unit is for you. This unit was designed to create additional space in a kitchen while allowing the room to maintain an open feel. Cabinets or closed shelving can make a room look and feel smaller. When space is hard to come by, you want to avoid this if possible. A kitchen unit like this also makes great use of vertical space. Not to mention, secondary shelving looks aesthetically pleasing too.
The kitchen (pictured) is 8′ x 9′ wall to wall. The total floor space is approximately 5′ x 6′ with the existing kitchen cabinets. To paint a better picture, it is similar to a galley kitchen. The shelving unit has been placed at the end of the kitchen opposite the sink and stove. The refrigerator sits to the right of the shelving unit. Due to the open concept of wire shelving, the room does not look closed off, as you can see.
This particular unit is comprised of the following:
- 74 inch high rear posts
- 36 in high front posts
- Both bottom & middle shelves are 24 inches deep by 48 inches wide
- Upper shelf is 12 inches deep by 48 inches wide
- A shelf liner has been added to both the upper and lower shelves so smaller items do not fall through
- Butcher block is used to create additional counter space
As an option, you could add casters to make this unit mobile and transport it about the kitchen as you wish. The shelving unit pictured does not include wheels.
We have received several requests for different variations of this shelving unit. We are in the process of putting together pre-packaged kitchen shelving units to suit your needs. Check back soon for availability and options.
If you have any pictures of your secondary kitchen storage unit, email us a picture or two and we’ll feature it on our blog. Don’t forget to include additional details about the size of the room and components you selected.
